We were going to shut down GenGophers at the end of May. After three years in operation, we’d never managed to make enough money from ads to cover our hosting costs. But after receiving encouraging suggestions from a number of people (thank you!), we decided to give things another try.
Instead of relying solely on ad revenue, we have started to ask for donations. Viewing up to three books a week is still free, but to view more, we’re asking you to contribute $3 to view an unlimited number of books for a month, or $20 to view an unlimited number of books for a year.
We’ve been doing this for the past month, and for the first time we covered our hosting costs! We sincerely thank everyone who contributed.
We know there are many more genealogy books that could be made searchable. If things continue to go well this year, we hope to be able to double the number of books we can make searchable next year.
Please tell your friends!
Sincerely,
Your genealogy gophers

I am getting a message that your website is not secure. Have you made efforts to fix this?

Yes, I forgot to renew the https certificate :-(. I just renewed it and it’s working now.

I don’t think it is. I’m still getting a “Not Secure” message.

Thanks for the reminder. Our https certificate had expired. I renewed the certificate and it should be working again now. (It expires around Jan 20th each year.)

Hello! I’m preparing a talk on Digital Libraries and noticed that your site is offline at the moment. Is this temporary? Hope so because I love your site! 🙂

It’s back up today – yay! 😀

The site seems to go down for a few minutes once or twice a day. I haven’t been able to figure out why yet. Hopefully next year I’ll be able to fix this when I get more time to work on GenGophers. Just in case, you might want to take some screenshots as a backup when you give your talk on digital libraries.
